Navigation and Waterways in Germany – Meeting the Challenges of Climate Change

KLIWAS is a research programme of the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI). Thirty departmental research projects, based on the multi-model approach attempted to assess climate change impacts on waterways. The impacts on all aspects of water in Central Europe in the nearer future (2021-2050) will be moderate, but in the distant future (2071 - 2100) stronger impacts can be expected. Sensitivity studies showed a variety of options that can range from cilvil engineering measures via improved maintenance practices up to innovative technologies.
